So first of all–what’s a Puppet Slam? The Puppet Slam Network defines a Puppet Slam as, “the nexus of vaudeville, burlesque, and performance art through the intersection of experimental theater, art, music, and dance as a viable alternative to the culturally homogenous digital mass media.”
In other words, a puppet slam fits perfectly within the collection of art, film, food, and new media that we celebrate here at Indie Grits.
The Spork in Hand Puppet Slam is an ADULTS ONLY event and now a staple in making Indie Grits the unique festival experience that it is. Our puppet slam calls together puppeteers and artists from across the southeast to perform along side the Slam’s creators and Columbia’s very own, Belle et Bête, also known as Lyon Hill and Kimi Maeda. They describe the program as, “gloriously gritty evenings of experimental short puppetry and object theatre performances…a celebration of Southern puppetry that is off-the-beaten-path.”
New and Upcoming Acts at the 2014 Puppet Slam:
Drew Allison of Charlotte NC’s Grey Seal Puppets will be bringing his hilarious puppetry skills to the 2014 puppet slam. Drew Allison and his team have been in the business of custom puppets and creative puppetry for over 30 years, with fresh story telling and top notch puppet construction always being first priority.
Drew is planning to present ARIA, an opera singer who sings the theme song from The Beverly Hillbillies, and Rumpelstiltskin Revisited which deals with post-fairytale animosity that bubbles to the surface.
This year’s Puppet Slam House Band is Can’t Kids–a local music favorite here in Columbia, SC. Give their latest record, Brushes, Touches, Tongues, a good listen for ultimate Puppet Slam preparedness. Be as cool as the local fans by familiarizing yourself with this music video, as well:
Attending the Spork in Hand Puppet Slam will usher you into a whole new world of eccentric artistry and fun–located right here in the southeast!
The Spork and Hand Puppet Slam will be on the first Saturday and Sunday of the festival, April 12th and 13th. Official time and tickets coming soon!
