Indie Grits 2009 Day 5

Posted: 7:42 AM

Is it really over already? What do you mean I have to go back to my regular life now? I feel like I keep thanking the Indie Grits staff, but I could never thank them enough for all of the amazing films and fun.

The nuanced programming really became clear when Georg, Roger, and I sat down to the task of selecting the award winners this morning. Trying to eliminate films not in contention in the various categories quickly became almost impossible, so a spirited conversation ensued. To have such a wealth of choices is truly a luxury and a credit to Indie Grits and the amazing filmmakers it attracts.

When we had finally reached our decisions, we moseyed over to the Nickelodeon, where the filmmakers' brunch next door at Immaculate was winding down and the awards ceremony was gearing up.

The winners merit a post of their own, so I won't step on any toes. I do have to award plaudits, though, to the two of the most memorable acceptance speeches: Shiri Fitzgerald's amazing composure as she accepted the Young Grit award on behalf of her absent director, "Miss Paula" (Paula Wood), has me wanting to be her when I grow up.

And Virtual Grit winner Ricky Kelly, accepting the award on behalf of his co-director Scott Ross, took the opportunity to offer a warm, heartfelt, rambling, and hilarious thank you to the entire city of Columbia. "I fell in love," he revealed.

I know exactly how he feels. --Amy
